October in the Toddler room!

This month we have been learning all about Autumn. When we accessed the garden we noticed that lots of leaves had fallen from the trees. The leaves had turned a variety of different colours such as orange and brown and became very crunchy. We decided to collect the leaves and make some leaf rubbing pictures. We selected a variety of different sized leaves and added them into our folded paper. We rubbed the crayon on top to reveal a leaf shaped pattern. This activity was a great way to strengthen our muscles and gave us a great talking point learning new vocabulary.

We then explored the textures of pumpkins. We used spoons and our hands to scoop out the inside. We found so many seeds and used number language to count how many there was. The children then wanted to add water, selecting their on food colouring and creating potions. We watched as the seeds floated to the top and the pumpkin get squishy.

We used markers to draw on our pumpkins, creating eyes, ears, mouths and noses. We showed good control, creating long and short marks. We used a wet cloth to rub off the marks and soon found out that the markers wouldn’t work unless we dried them again.

The children carried on their interest in mark making by accessing the paint. Again the selected their own colours and talked about which were our favourites. We used primary colours and mixed them together to create new colours, which we discovered were called secondary colours.

We carried on our interest of wet and dry and made our own animal and car wash. We worked together as a team to make sure all the dirty resources were soap free and clean again. We then placed them on the towel to dry. We talked about what animals we had and sang nursery rhymes around them.
