Exploring Pumpkins!
Following our Story of the Month ‘Room on the Broom,’ we have made some pumpkin potions and witches brew in the Messy Room. The children all worked together using their big muscles to scoop out the pumpkins’ insides – we squeezed and squelched the insides using our hands, smelt them, listened to them SPLAT on the table, and looked at all the seeds inside.
The children used lots of descriptive language “sticky” “gooey” “stringy” to describe the insides of the pumpkins, and came up with some good questions allowing us to develop our language and knowledge further “if we bury the pumpkin guts will it grow a big tree?”
Once the insides had been scooped out, we used different materials – glitter, soap, leaves, seeds and different coloured water for colour mixing – and made some fantastic potions. Recalling key moments from the story – “Iggity Ziggity Zaggety Zoom” “will this magic potion make a broom?”
